VETSLEARN // TRUE SALARY CALCULATOR

What civilian salary actually matches your military pay?

Base pay is not your salary. BAH and BAS are tax-free — a civilian employer has to pay you in fully-taxed dollars to replace them. Enter your numbers, get the real figure, and see exactly how it's built.

We only cover the largest 15 installations directly today (see coverage note below the result). Any other ZIP — including overseas/APO addresses — falls back to the national-average housing allowance. Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA) is out of scope for this tool; this only estimates CONUS BAH.

Adjust the civilian-side line items (optional)

What a civilian employer typically covers of your health premium. Default $2,400/yr — TRICARE has no premium, so a civilian job replacing it needs to cover this too.

Difference between your BRS TSP match and a civilian 401(k) match, if you know it. Defaults to 0 — you know your own numbers here better than we do.

Which ZIP codes do we cover directly?

Housing cost varies a lot by installation, so a national average understates high-cost duty stations and overstates low-cost ones. We seed the largest bases we've curated data for below; everywhere else uses the national average and says so. Coverage today: — of the ~300 DoD military housing areas.
